Among the vast intangible cultural heritage of China, Dongyang Woodcarving shines uniquely like a bright pearl, with its profound historical background and exquisite carving skills. This traditional craft, which originated in the Tang Dynasty and flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties, not only bears the rich cultural heritage of the Dongyang area but is also the crystallization of the wisdom and creativity of countless Dongyang woodcarvers.

Dongyang Woodcarving is renowned worldwide for its delicate lines, rich layers, and vivid images. Each piece is a masterpiece meticulously conceived and skillfully carved by craftsmen. They are not just ornaments but also witnesses of history and transmitters of culture. Today, we are fortunate to appreciate a partial work of flowers and birds by Mr. Zhou Xiangru, a master of Dongyang Woodcarving, which is undoubtedly a double feast for the eyes and soul.

With his exquisite skills in deep relief, high relief, and multi-layered carving, Mr. Zhou brings out the charm of landscapes and flowers and birds to the fullest. Under his knife, every flower and every leaf seem to come to life, swaying in the wind or blooming quietly, displaying the boundless vitality and harmonious beauty of nature. The patterns of his works are beautiful, the artistic conception is profound, the structure is ingenious, and the layers are rich, making people feel as if they are in a poetic world.

Peony, known as the “king of flowers,” is famous for its magnificent and luxurious appearance; chrysanthemum wins the reputation of “hermit among flowers” with its noble and elegant image; and plum blossom earns the title of “champion among flowers” for its noble, strong, and modest character. Mr. Zhou uses his superb woodcarving skills to portray the natural charm of these flowers lifelike, which is truly breathtaking. If colored, these flowers would be even more lifelike, indistinguishable from the real ones.

Mr. Zhou’s works not only demonstrate the superb craftsmanship of Dongyang Woodcarving but also reflect the craftsman’s awe and love for nature and life. Every detail he carves on the wood with the tip of his knife represents his longing and pursuit of a better life. Such works not only possess high artistic value but are also important carriers of traditional Chinese culture. We look forward to more landscapes and flowers and birds created by Mr. Zhou to enjoy with friends.
