The 2024 China Mermaid Open Competition made waves at Xiaomeisha Sea World from Friday to Sunday, enchanting audiences with graceful performances in the venue’s iconic Whale Shark Tank.
With a water depth of 9 meters and an expansive 28-by-8-meter viewing window, the huge acrylic tank provided the perfect setting for athletes to showcase their elegance and skill while offering spectators an immersive experience.
This was the first time the national-level competition was held in Guangdong Province, drawing mermaid performers from across the country. Combining elements of synchronized swimming, freediving, and monofin swimming, the sport has quickly gained popularity in China.
Let’s dive into the dynamic world of mermaids through the lens of Shenzhen Daily photographer Liu Xudong.
